What Makes our Tile Company Green?
GREEN BUILDING and TILE
t  321 242 5780
Most people think the green traits of ceramic tile are limited to one feature; recycled content. The
truth is, regardless of whether or not tile contains recycled content, it is one of the greenest and
healthiest surfacing materials there is.

For example, carpet is labeled green if it is produced from recycled content, but that doesn't negate
the fact that carpet and its padding is made from petrochemicals that off-gas toxins into your home.
The same is true of laminates and other types of engineered wood and vinyl flooring. This is not true
of ceramic tile.

This question requires a two-part answer. Part one of the answer addresses the inherently green
and house healthy attributes of tile. In part two, we'll look at what our company does specifically to
further enhance the benefits of using tile and stone flooring and surfacing materials.
Being "green" all boils down to a couple of basic things: Human Health and Environmental Impact.
The use of ceramic tile has an extremely positive affect on both of these categories.
Regarding sustainability, tile floors can last for hundreds of years. There are beautiful and fully
functional tile & mosaic floors in Cocoa Village and Old Eau Gallie that date to the early 1900's.
The fabulous random mosaic floor in the Florida Air Academy dates to the mid 1900's.

While you review the list below, consider alternative flooring materials and how they compare.
The bulleted list below highlights most of the house healthy traits and durability features
common to all ceramic tile.
Part 2.   Studio Tile Doing Its Part
Environmental Impact
The most significant impact we make on the
environment is how we handle waste materials.

Just about every renovation begins with
extracting floor materials, including tile.
The great thing about waste tile and it's
cementious setting materials (mortar, thinset,
grout) is that they are recyclable. These
photos document the extra steps we take to
make it happen.
Old tile, mortar, grout and waste tile scrap are
segregated on site. Separate bins are used for
cardboard, plastic, paper and trash. The bins are
loaded in our vehicle and taken to a Brevard
County concrete recycling facility where they are
emptied and co-mingled with other waste
masonry headed for recycling.
Heavy machinery and conveyors move
concrete & masonry waste around the plant
through the crushing and sorting process.
Recycling masonry materials for use as gravel
reduces the amount of waste that goes into
our landfills. It also reduces the use of stone
gravel, a raw natural resource.
In the foreground below, you can see the wide
variety of masonry materials collected at the
recycling plant - old sidewalks, driveways, patios,
roof tiles, foundations and similar materials.

The mounds in the far background are the
finished result; various weights and sizes of
gravel used for drainage, clean fill, road beds,
patio beds and other types of construction
projects that utilize clean fill.
